Finally getting rid of the aftermarket flex fan on my 65 Vette with a 396 (NOM). This fan was attached with bolts thru a spacer then directly into the water pump. Is it better to use bolts or mount studs on the water pump flange, then washers & nuts to secure fan clutch to water pump? I don't want to ruin a brand new Dewitt Aluminum radiator if the fan decides to come loose. My car is just a daily driver.

Your application originally used bolts for the fan clutch-to-water pump hub attachment. So, if you want to be "correct", you'd need to use bolts. The bolts will work just fine and there should be no more risk of breakage than if studs were used. I'd use SAE grade 8 bolts, though, and make sure they are long enough to penetrate the lock washer, fan clutch hub, and waterpump flange (but not too much longer). The original bolts were 5/16-24 X 1".
Studs were first used for the 1969 model year and were used thereafter. Studs do offer some convenience and ease of installation benefits. Once again, if used, make sure they are SAE grade 8 studs. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Nick,
here's what an original set looks like. Other known original headmarkings are...AS, S, L8, RSC, RBW, TR, 1NL4 and a few more. The Aim calls out for a 1" bolt like Joe said but I have seen many many 3/4" bolts used on factory cars. The 3/4" bolt stick through by 2-3 threads. The 1" bolt has a 1/4" sticking inside.
