    C1 wheel cylinder honing

I have managed to find correct 1 3/16" used cylinders for my 1960 restoration. How much can I hone them? I have honed one, and it is pretty clean at about .006 over. The other one may need more.

The other one will likely need more to clean up a rust groove near each end of the cylinder.

    Thanks,

Don, You just hone enough to rough up the surface and clean up a little. If it is really bad you need to resleeve. My recent car sat since 1991, so I disassembled, cleaned up and honed then put in a rebuild kit. My brakes work just fine now. The master cylinder did not need to be sleeved (49,000 miles). But I have all matching number wheel & master cylinders.

I to have correct part numbers for all the wheel cylinders and Master Cylinder. I did have the master cylinder sleeved as it was really grungy. When I disassembled it looked like some kind of brown soup inside, i.e. rust and very old brake fluid.

When I started the wheel cylinders where a mismatch of replacements from who knows when. I was able to get two NOS correct for the rear. And then tracked down correct used front cylinders from a couple of different people.

Defects near the ends where the pistons reside shouldn't affect sealing of the piston seals. You don't need to hone the pits/grooves completely out if they're beyond the area where the piston seals travel.
