Obituary: Josiah E. Chess died January 9, 2011 in Foley, Alabama. Mr Chess was 85 years old. He was born in Lake City, Michigan January 28 1925, the son of Thomas and Ellen Blanche Chess . He graduated from Lake City High School with the class of 1943. He served in the United States Army during WWII where he spent overseas duty on Okinawa. Josiah was a long time resident of Houghton Lake, where he was an electrical serviceman for Consumers Power Company for 33 years. He was a Corvette enthusiast and owned and restored many Corvettes. He was a founding member of the National Corvette Restorers Society. He was also a member of the local chapter of the Antique Auto Club of America and the American Legion. Josiah was a member of the United Methodist Church in Houghton Lake, MI He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Gertrude Meiser Chess, his children, Grace Godell of Cadillac, MI and Mary Jo (Chris) Leverett of Eatontown, NJ There are three step-children, Sandra ( Marcel LeBrun) Wendel of Ellijay, GA, Roger (Carol) Wendel of Fife Lake, MI and Wendel G. Wendel of Grand Cayman, BWI. Also surviving are grandchildren Michael (Angie) Godell, Matthew Godell, Theodore Leverett, Margaret (Mike) Hartman and Russell Leverett, Amanda LoVecchio, Thomas Chess, Christopher Chess, Becky (Steve) Huber, Shannon (Tara) Kemmerer , Steven (Heidi) Wendel, Nathan (Misty) Wendel, Jacob Wendel, Caleb (Heather) Wendel , Tonya Wendel, Jonathan Wendel and twenty great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a daughter in law Judy Chess of Culpeper, VA , a sister, Paula Vanderstow, of St. Johns, MI and a brother, James (Betty) Chess, of Ocala, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son William Chess and a son in law, Raymond Godell. A memorial service will be held in the spring in Lake City.
