    65 327/300 cold start problem!

Carter carburator was rebuilt 2 years ago with a automatic choke installed from another carter carburator. The automatic choke might not be working?.. not sure if its the choke or a carb setting.
Having car judged and need this to start on first attempt.
IS there any adjustments you feel I can make here that might solve this problem?

Well first, I'd take a good look at it in the morning after it has been sitting overnight. Take the lid off the aircleaner and see if the choke butterfly is closed. It may be open at this point which isn't really a problem. Next grab the throttle rod and pull it back to set the choke. Two things should happen, the choke blade should FULLY close and you should see evidence of the accelerator pump giving out a shot of fuel. With the choke closed, you should have the fast idle stop on the throttle lever at the fast idle position. With a well-tuned engine and these things in place, you should be able to crank the car and have it start. If all those are in place and you don't start quickly and run without stalling (NO action on the throttle to this point) then you should start looking at ignition and or take a better look at the stream from the accelerator pump. Wires? Plugs? lots here we don't know that could come into play, but that is at least a start on eliminating some possibilities.

It is quite common for these mechanical/hot air chokes to have a form of white corrosion build up in the pulloff piston/cylinder area of the choke housing. This will make the choke at least sluggish, or to stick in an open or closed position.

        Michael,

If you have a 1963 shop manual there is a very good step by step procedure on the AFB carburetor adjustments.

That manual has been a great help to me for so many things, the 64 and 65 additions are supplements to this manual so you may want to consider it.
