    Blasting Cabinet

    Guys,

Need a favor on a recommendation for a blasting cabinet at my shop. Would like to buy American made if possible. Also, I know there are significant differences in the pick up tubes and some folks I've talked to say they have had to modify the pick up system just to make it work as well as changing the lighting and venting.... If I can avoid reinventing the wheel, I'd like to do so. Thanks ever-so-much for your insight.

Buy from the largest maker of blasting cabinets - http://www.tptools.com/

Got mine from them 5+ years ago. High quality, US made and never had a single problem with it.

      Hi Daniel,

Pretty hard to beat TP Tools. Google them and you'll see their full line of Scat Blast cabinets.

Back in the early '90s when I was restoring my '65, I used the Scat cabinet at the old shop my buddies and I used to hang out at. The cabinets are solid and vacuum and filters are very reliable. The bigger the better. We used the largest one they sold and at time and at times, it still wasn't long enough, but we made due.

The shop I frequent now as my '66 undergoes her frameoff has the exact same cabinet. The owner lets me use it regularly and as thanks, I overhauled the motor and bought all new filters, gloves, and window clear shields. I even drilled a hole in the cinderblock wall and exhausted the filter cannister outside. Much nicer environment.

When I extend my garage I'll most certainly buy a Scat cabinet. Good luck.

Mike, They are SKAT cabinets and the link is in my post above. I agree, TP Tools make great products.

          Jim,

You and I were posting at the same time. Yep, SKAT's the name.

Well, there you have it Daniel!

          Enjoy,
          Mike

I use the #780 top load Skat and love it. It's a lot easier to replace the glass lens covers with the top load feature and saves room. I recommend using their vacuum and the HEPA filter, worth it. I added another light too, could be better lit.
All in all I'd buy the same thing again if needed. I can get trailing arms and differentials in mine. Although it's faster to have a blast house clean the diff's for $35 then the 1.5 it takes me to clean them up where I want them.
Perfect for small parts like steering boxes.

Likewise, I picked up a Skat bead blaster 2 or 3 years ago (model 960) along with vacuum and HEPA filter setup to avoid blast dust floating in my mini-garage and love the setup. I've done a bunch of small stuff and even redid an engine stand I picked up at a local swap meet, cleaning it up very nicely. I see unit now goes for $1299 but picked mine up for $799...watch they go on sale all the time.

When I was shopping the suggestions was to include the foot pedal, the vacuum/HEPA filter and extra tips. The foot pedal is nice when handling large, heavy items and need both hands without stopping. Here's a list of the 960 features:

              960-SE SKAT BLAST Cabinet Includes:
              • Powerful Vac-35 Vacuum to remove dust as you blast
              • C-25 Foot-Pedal-Operated Power Gun
              • Foot Pedal with 7 ft air hose
              • 1 steel and 2 ceramic nozzles
              • 28"L double-strength cabinet gloves
              • 50 lbs fast-cutting Skat Magic Abrasive
              • Automatic abrasive recycling system
              • Right-hand side-loading door, full-size 11 gauge steel
              • Strong 11-20 gauge USA steel construction
              • Expanded metal screen holds objects up to 200 lbs
              • Quick-change trap door for fast abrasive changes

I have the 960 also and after getting the vibrator kit a couple of years after the fact I am very happy with it. I have an automatic drain on my compressor so I have air twenty-four hours a day and if there is some small part to clean up no waiting for air to build up, I can start blasting right away.

I bought a Trinco Dry Blast Master Model 48 and BP dust collector manufactured in Michigan by Trinity Tool Company. The cabinet is made from 11 guage steel which is the main reason I bought this one over the TP. I have had it for 4 years now and couldn't be happier with it.

Not made in the US but I bought a 40lb cabinet from Harbor freight which works as well as any I have used that had siphon feed. It is $179 with a coupon that is in the back of several car magazines. Cabinet performance is mostly tied to how much air you have and not getting the media wet or sticky.

Had my Scat Blast for twenty years +. Added a second light and modified the vacuum outlet so it would not vacuum up my glass beads.

Would not hesitate to purchase another one from TP. They have an excellent catalog and anything the hobbyist or professional can imagine.

My advise would be to get the largest one you can afford and make sure you have a compressor that has enough CFM output to handle the cabinet you purchase.

I also bought two Trinco blasters..... One is a blast master 36 and the other is a blast master 48 with abrasive seperator..
Both basically the same except the 48 is wider.. Plus I added a 3 ft. extension to the right side of the 48, which I can close off when not needed... Truly an exceptional blaster and they have great prices...

Am not connected to them in any way but they are approx. 6-7 miles from me.. That's all they do in two huge buildings...
Check 'em out, you may be surprised.....
