i am starting on rear wheel bearings on the 74 what would be the width of were the shims go

If you mean the inside width of the pocket in the frame where the front of the trailing arm and toe shims go, it varied (and so did the trailing arm) - that's why it was stuff-shimmed in a fixture. -

John, i have seen on several that the bolt is to long for the cotter pin,it looks like you would have to spread the frame out a bit

Richard, You may need to place a "beefier" washer on the bolt at the head before you install it. I'm assuming you are having the castle nut tighten down beyond the cotter pin hole. It is also possible you were not agressive enough at packing the excess slot with shims and have compressed the compartment somewhat.Comment

I think the bolt/castle nut will fit better with a lock washer then the castle nut. The cotter pin slips through the castle nut in a better position to function properly.
On my 63 and 67, the shim pack is approx 3/4" divided on each side of the trailing arm, this is 3/4" drivers side and 3/4" passengers side. I know it can vary as the proper placement is to shim the inside for alignment (toe in) then shim the outside to where the last shim is a tight fit just tapped in so the pack is tight.
After you tuck the shims down in the frame and tighten the bolt they will not come loose. Don't tighten the bolt until the weight of the car is on the tire.
