    Offset Timing Key

Anyone have an opinion concerning the use (pros or cons) of an offset timing key for the lower timing chain gear on a '64 365hp car w/original spec solid lift cam? Going to have the oil pan and timing cover off soon. Good time to change, if desirable.

Offset key will advance or retard the cam depending on which way it is installed.

What are you trying to do?

Just trying to optain maximum performance. Not interested in racing it, however, really want to be fully prepared another time one of those new Cobra's wants another lesson.

        Fred,

You need to take a lesson from Duke and Degree your camshaft. Another little hint might be to change the rear to 4:10 before you jump on those pony cars.
With the stock cam they will be to the other redlight before you can get that 365 rolling! Torque it just ain't got but when it gets the rpm's up, lookout and hold on!

If I've ever seen a more contradictory statement...

Now, think about it and tell us what you reallly want.

If you think your can make a vintage Corvette with an OE engine faster than a repli-Cobra with a modern engine that weights at least 700 pounds less, you must know something that none of us do.

Diddling around at the margin by advancing or retarding the cam doesn't do much. Power is all about head flow. That's where you have to start.

For the way most of us drive vintage Corvettes, the low end torque improvement from advancing the 30-30 cam four degrees would be benefitial to this notoriously torque-shy engine.

Retarding it four degrees along with thorough head massaging will maximize power in the 6000-7500 rev range for vintage racers, but it won't get out of its own way below 3000.

Thanks for the tips. About that Cobra, all I saw was headlights.
