What does factory side pipes mean? I purchased a 1966 corvette convertible (427/390) that was advertised as the "real deal" being mostly original and it pretty much is. Car was sold to me by one the well known/large dealers. The car was advertised with factory side pipes; I don't think I have factory installed side pipes; what's the deduction in NCRS judging and is it still possible to get a Flight cert. if the side pipes are not factory original?

The deduction is substantial (100+ points), but you can lose up to 270 points on the car and still get Top Flight.- Top

Re: Factory Side Pipes
There might be a bit of tonque in cheek hyperbole here. Once could say "Factory original side exhaust" when the PARTS that were added to a car originally built/shipped with through-frame exhaust were, in-fact, across the counter GM originals versus today's non-GM reproduction exhaust components...- Top

Re: Factory Side Pipes
Thanks everyone! I do have a St. Louis car and some of the other cutting that's done for side pipes. In researching other posts today I found a photo of the punch-outs along the side frame that are required..I have yet to check this out but I'm feeling car was misrepresented...hope I'm wrong. I guess you're never too old or too ingnorant/stupid to get suckered.- Top

Re: Factory Side Pipes
Vince:
It SHOULD mean that the car was originally built with sidepipes versus undercar exhaust.
What it GENERALLY means in today's $$$$$ world is that the car has GM manufacturered sidepipes sold over the counter and installed at some point on a car that once had undercar exhaust.
They (sellers) typically use these words to get a potential buyer to think he/she is getting one of the relatively rare sidepipe built cars.
We have a similar situation with the term MATCHING NUMBERS. It was supposed to mean the car has an original engine and trans. It now generally means that someone has re-stamped the numbers to make the potential buyer happy and demand more $$$$.

Re: Factory Side Pipes
I'm sure you may know. But start w/ the trim tag Body Build. S for St Louis or AO Smith. These letters are before the body number on your trim tag. St Louis build is OK.

Re: Factory Side Pipes
Check the AIM books (both '65 and '66). You'll see there was a running change regarding the rubber weatherstrip on the engine compartment splash shields...
I wound up throwing away a correct/original set of splash sheilds from my '65 due to faulty advice from judges who were uninformed of the early/late construction differences and wound up playing 'teacher' to some judges who believed that all '65 side exhaust cars were built one way!- Top

Re: Factory Side Pipes
FYI . When I flight judged my 67 side pipe car, I was told by a very experienced national judge that there is another fool proof way to check for original sidepipes. When installed on the car, the factory used a filler product in the slats known as "dum dum". It should still be in place.
BTW, as told to me by this judge. we had 13 mid year sidepipe cars for flight judging. Only two were original factory installed.- Top

From the description of your car that came from that dealer, I think we ALL know what dealer you are speaking about. Words are like play-dough, they can be twisted, manipulated, contorted and reshaped by anyone. Terms like factory sidepipes could mean that they are GM sidepipes, but added to a car that never was "born" with sidepipes. Factory sidepipes could mean reproduction side pipes that were added to a car that wasn't "born" with sidepipes to make the car look like it had "factory Sidepipes". Etc Etc Etc.
I LOVE it when he advertises a car and in the written description of the car he says "factory sidepipes", BUT when you look at the picture of the tank sticker, there is no sidepipes listed on the tank sticker. Those are the ads I love the most.....ARA- Top
