Register and Title Autos in All States-SEMA

The SEMA Action Network provides the following registering info by state on the SEMA website:

Everything You Need to Register and Title Your Hobby Car in All 50 States

The information for each state is organized as follows:
    • Definitions:
    • Laws: Information from state DMVs, administrative codes and statutes providing guidance on titling and registering unique vehicle classes.
    • Exemptions: Information on specific equipment and emissions exemptions for different types of specialty vehicles.
    • Forms: Printable forms and publications necessary to register and title your vehicle.

If you have further questions, please contact Ashley Ailsworth at ashleya@sema.org.

Perhaps SEMA can assist in removing barriers, red-tape and bureacracy from the process of titling and registering classic cars? In my state, New Mexico, the laws have now all changed on any car older than 1980. The VIN inspection has to be done by the local State Police office, no one else allowed. You have to make an appointment, which usually takes at least a month ahead of time to get. The state has a law that out of state vehicles must be titled and registered within 60 days of sale. This makes the whole process very cumbersome and prone to delays and violations of the law. The officials say it is not a big deal since pre-1980 cars are rare and you just have to put up with it. This makes many think twice about buying any new old cars. Last year a bill was introduced to make pre-1980 cars pass the same emissions requirements (CO2 ncluded) as new cars. It failed, but they will try again, our hobby and passion is under constant attack.

SEMA is VERY proactive in dealing with legislation. They are the voice of the hot rod and collector car hobby in all the state legislatures and Washington.
