Reflection on C1 side view mirrors

Can anyone tell me what the original glass reflection looks like on an original C1 side view mirror?

As I recall, it is one of the following when an object is touched directly on the surface of the glass:

    1. The reflection of the object appears at the surface of the glass (i.e. the object is touching itself).

    2. The reflection of the object appears below the surface of the glass (i.e. the object is sunk into the glass).

Dale Pearman explained this to me many years ago, but I can't remember what he said. If it matters,
Dale was demonstrating with a 1962 side view mirror.

This is what my '59 looks like.

Correction: When I tried Gary's credit card technique, I can see the thickness of the glass. It is a 2., not a 1. Thanks for the tip, Gary.

Ed, it's year dependent on the type of mirror glass used. Gary....

1953 to 1959 mirrors, exterior and interior when you hold a credit card at 90 degrees to the mirror surface, the reflection and credit card are separated by the thickness of the glass and do not touch.

Silvering is on the back of the glass.

During 1959 or 1960 the mirrors changed to day/night glass, which is silvered on the front and the reflection touches. One mirror was changed to day/night glass (can't recall exactly whether it was interior or exterior) and the other used the earlier glass. Marilyn Heitzman can tell you when the changeover occurred.

By 1961 both exterior and interior were day/night front silvered glass and the reflection touched.

Sorry to throw a wrench into the works, but I think Marilyn told me the change over occured between 61 and 62 for the interior mirror. That's what my notes say - maybe I misunderstood her.
