    Fresh air intake hose clamps

I am trying to install the fresh air intake hose on my 58. The band clamps from CC are sold as being correct for this car. The problem I have is there aren't really any instructions on how to apply them and it is not intuitive to me. Does the loose end of the clamp go the inside or to the outside of the loop? How do you get this clamp on nice and tight? Turning the set screw doesn not tighten the clamp circumfrentially...it only keeps the loose end from slipping. So, do I assume that I just need to pull it snug with a pair of pliers?
    All help appreciated,
    Jim

Jim, are you talking about the large tower clamp? If so, as you tighten it (screw clock-wise) it draws the clamp tighter around the hose. The new clamps have a habit of the bottom of the screw getting off center if you tighten too fast. Tighten very slowly right down the center. The clamp does not have to be very tight to hold the fresh air hose.

I think the tower clamp you are talking about and have a pic is for the 61-62 car. The screw mech on my clamp is oriented on its side. When you turn the screw the mech only clamps down on the free end of the band. I am pretty sure it is meant to be pulled tight manually and then secured down. It is definately not a very secure band...I wouldn't call it a clamp...I assume that is why it was replaced. Any other thoughts out there would be greatly appreciated.

I went to the CC site to view it. I believe the one you have is drawn tight over the hose and then the screw is tightened to hold it. My old 56 had one like that back in the late 60's.

I agree John. I don't think there is anything else to it. If there is, I'm definately missing it.

put the loose end through the clamp end with the loose end to the inside toward the hose, put the hose in it and make an approximate mark, remove from hose then fold the loose end down 180 degrees, then assemble and tighten the screw, it helps to pinch the fold nice and tight and add a little lube to make it work, you'll get the hang of it

Here's a link that shows GM part number for your 58 clamp

The Judging Guide for 62 says Tower clamps SAE Type-C. My original has tower clamps.

tower clamps on the fresh air hose on right inner skirt, side clamps of the two fresh air hoses on the fuel injected 62's located on the left inner skirt/air cleaner to air meter. mike
