    1977 Windshield Install

I've read through the bulk of windshield install threads (and horror stories).

For my 77 I want to use the modern process but I have yet to see a concise set of instructions . What size blocks, specifically which primer, adhesive (aka, 3m single stage primer ...whose adhesive and which model), and (I don't have the AIM in front of me) I don't recall ever seeing a damming strip on the 77 when I took off the windshield.

The threads I've seen so far have convinced me I'd rather use a pro but I really need to do this myself so the results work correctly. I've done everything else myself (except for paint - just got it back - beautiful single stage) why not this.

Thanks for any concise guidance from this group of pro's.

    Michael -

The process should be shown in detail in the "Corvette Body" section of the Passenger Car Service Manual.

Interesting that you should mention the service manual. The 77 manual actually shows a single sealing strip (p 2D-8, fig 2D-10) which is inconsistent with the assembly manual. The service manual does talk about the use of silane primer and mixing the caulking and accelerator. Neither manual talks about the use of setting blocks but the AM suggests the installed height of .25" and much more detail about the various primers and sealers but there is no way, for a layman like myself, to translate this to a product system (like how do all the various primers translate to a 3m system that work together).

Anyone looking at the "pressure sensitive adhesive sealing strip" could easily confuse this with butyl that many people have referred to in the past, in particular when only one strip is shown in the diagram in the service manual, hence some confusion. I suspect this diagram is incorrect because the kit discussed at the bottom left of page 2D-6 suggests more than what appears in the diagram.

So really what I was hoping for was a given 3m primer for the glass, for the frame (I think there is a single stage primer now), and a given caulking/sealer and damming strip from someone amongst us with glass experience.

      Thanks.
