    58 270hp correct balancer

Question, would the 270hp '58 use the 3760584 balancer pictured in the JG page 74 with a rivetted or bolted-on pulley? Some people argue that early SHP 58's used a 57 balancer, the question is what is the correct configuration? Seen some posts indicating a rivetted pulley, others indicating bolt-on for the SHP 58. Some pictures would be of great help.

    Hi!

I have some information with pictures that may help you at:

http://www.rayscorvette.com/ and then click on C-1 Resources , WNYNCRS Mechanical Judging School.

It is quite a large file and may take a few minutes to download. It is at the end of the PDF presentation.

    Ray

If anyone has any restoration information that they would like to share with other restores, pleases send to ray63@rochester.rr.com and if applicable to C-1 restoration I will add it to the web site.

    Thanks!

can't provide any 58 info as i've never owned one BUT if the early 58 270's used a 57 balancer and pulley, it would take a pulley BOLTED to the harmonic balancer IF the 58 used a 57 283 hp set-up. If the 58 used a set-up off a 220, 245, 250 or 270 hp 57 vette, then the RIVETED set-up is what you want.A deep groove riveted pulley/balancer is a rare bird. have heard the 1 1/2ton chevy trucks of the era can be a source. mike

        All------

GM says that all 1958 Corvettes except 290 HP used balancer GM #3743849. This is a balancer WITHOUT an integral pulley. For 1959 this changed to GM #3760584 which was also a balancer without integral pulley. It also became SERVICE for 1958 and earlier in January, 1959. I have no idea what the differences were between these two balancers but I suspect the differences were minimal. Certainly, both were of the type WITHOUT integral pulley.

1957 Corvettes except 283 HP used a balancer with integral, "deep groove" (1/2") pulley. This balancer was GM #3712763. This balancer was also used for other applications including but not limited to 1956-57 series 3 and 4 trucks. Could this balancer also have been used on some 1958's? I suppose so but I certainly don't know so.

The 270HP was not available until later in 1958 and I think all 58's used the 3760584 balancer.
