    Catalytic Conveter found!

Well, I pull into the gas station to fill up my '75 convertible and there, sitting on top of the trash can, is a GM catalytic converter that looks just like mine. It's got the AC logo stamped in the bottom and part number 277126 and date code 25101901.

Any idea what this fits? Is the date code Sept., 1980?

    Thanks,
    Tory

I don't see that number in my '53-'80 GM Corvette Parts Book, but it shows a 1975 Corvette catalytic converter part # as 8998163.

...it also shows '76-'80 Corvettes as #6498988, 1980 only as #8999178 and the 1980 305ci California Corvette #8999179.

Thanks Paul. I thought '75 corvettes used 8998109! But your book shows 8998163? Can you confirm that?

As for the found cat, maybe it's for some other GM application. If it's not for a Corvette, then I guess it's off to the trash can again.

Converter GM #25101901 is applicable to late 80's-early 90's Chevrolet and GMC trucks with 350 V-8 engines.

          Joe,

So the date code must be 277th day (Oct.) of 91? Would the cat be used on Corvettes too? If someone can use it, they can have it. Otherwise I'll toss it.

By the way, I don't know why anyone would simply toss one of these converters. They usually have significant core or scrap value, especially if they are a monolithic-type converter (i.e. honeycomb substrate). In fact, there is a national problem with converters being stolen off of running vehicles, especially trucks due to easier access, for the purpose of thieves "cashing in" on the core or scrap value.

No Corvette applications for that part number.

                Joe,
Yeah, I don't know either why someone would toss one, and at a gas station no less. So if it's of no use to anyone in the NCRS, then what do you suggest I do with it? Where would I scrap such a thing?

I know of recent theft problems with newer cats as they contain platinum or palladium. I didn't now the older ones had such materials of value.

Tory, do a Google search on scrap catalytic converter and see what comes up near you...here's one in Texas:

Maybe you'll pay for that tank of gas you bought at the station where you found it!
