Re: 71 BB Half Shaft Finsih

There was a lime green daub of paint on the BB half shafts to identify them. Does anyone have a picture on one showing what the green looks likew and where it is on the half shaft. Dennis, my shafts were pretty rough so I have bead blasted them and am going to try to find someone with a shot blaster to get the original finish back, if not it has been suggested to use steel wool on them now and they will look real close.

Maybe that stripe in the first picture I posted was lime green 40 years ago.

Here is a photo of my 71 LT-1 shafts the 2nd photos shows the green paint I never saw till the photo. The green is very close to what I used but I missed it by a few inches and the angle. You can also see the course look of the shafts the photos are after the resto in the early 90s had about 45k miles on it then.

Steel wool probably won't help you replicate the proper finish for big block halfshafts.

Steel wool burnishing would improve the appearance of small block half shafts after bead blasting, but not big block shafts...you want big block half shafts rough and dull. Steel wool "burnishes" or polishes the surface of bead blasted steel making it smoother and shinier...it helps recover some of the virgin mill finish look.

Hi Sheldon, here's a photo of my LS5 half shaft showing the St. Louis markings.

              Chris -

The green paint daub was applied at Chevrolet-Warren, where the half-shafts were made; they had to be able to differentiate the SB from the BB half-shafts in order to put them in the correct container for shipment.

                Hi John,
if the green daub=BB, can you shed light on the use of the yellow lines (think it is yellow)? I see the line on several examples but not sure what it represents?
