Does anyone know if any early built car (sept) can take prior years part number say for instance on an alternator from the prior years model as long as the part is dated within the prior 6 months?

Re: alternator
Greg, I think as long as the part no. is the same and dated within 6 mon. of your build date it should fly. keep in mind it should have the same configuration,(housing should be the same) do you have a judging manuel for your year?this should answer alot of questions and be important when restoring your car.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: alternator
If you're asking from a functional point of view then yes, no problem. From a judging point of view, unless there is either common knowledge of such a thing happening or a mention in the manuals, I would presume that most judges would take a deduction.
The principal in Flight Judging is 'typical of factory production'. Bona fide one off factory exceptions or errors unfortunately don't fall into the category of being 'typical' as illogical as that may seem. If you're convinced that this is the original alternator, I wouldn't change it.- Top

Re: alternator
The original alternator in my vette was replaced with an aftermarket before I got involved in NCRS. The part was sent out as a core by the repair shop. Now I want to get back to NCRS rules and replace it in my early build 1987 (Sept) coupe for flight judging.
I found an 1986 alternator made two months before my car. For judging I was wondering if the fact it was built within 6 months would be sufficent. Especially since its configuration is the exact same. Part numbers however are different for 1986 and 1987 alternators.
I have heard that production runs on various lines used part as discovered and I suppose in theory it could of happened that some cars got last years alternator if within spec.
Does anyone know if there is a NCRS rule that makes this acceptable?- Top

Re: alternator
Michael elucidated the NCRS rule -- there is no other rule.
