Repro park plug wire dating and quality

My car was built Oct 2 1969 but most of the catalogs say that I should buy 1Q69 wires. It seems to me that I should buy 3Q69 wires(?).

Also, how is the quality of the repro wires both in terms of judging and in terms of function?

    Thanks

    Mike

    Mike

I've never had any issues with small block wires but have with repro shielded big block wires.

Mike, I would think 3Q wires would be typical for a car built on the 2nd day of the 4th quarter. Unless the wires were not marked in "calendar" quarters....

Hey Bob, What problems did you have? I just got a shielded set for a 427/435 I'm about to finish up in a '67. They came from LL. BTW, It's a mid Nov '66, car so I chose 3Q66.

the repo plug wires, be they sbc or bbc, will not take many removals/reinstallations before the carbon core takes a dump and the engine begins missing. i've never had a set fresh out of the box that failed to transmit electrons to the spark plug but they are delicate. mike

          Hi Mike,
My mid-January built 71 has it's original spark-plug wires and they're from 3 different quarters.
Also, notice there is no dash between quarter number and Q, but there is between the Q and the year number.
The reproduction wires I've seen have 2 dashes. This can be seen once the distributor shield is removed during judging. It's easy to remove the first dash from the reproduction wires but then the spacing between the first number and the Q is inconsistent with the originals.
I'm not sure what the typical configuration for 68-69 spark-plug wires might be.
          Regards,
          Alan

The original wires on my January 29, 1970 are from three different quarters as well. date configuration is: 3-Q-69, 4Q-69, and 1Q-70.

I have posted this information before, and someplace in earlier threads is a discussion about it. Bill Clupper, who was involved with Packard Electric in the production of spark plug wires in that time frame, offered his take on the configuration of the dates. I believe the conclusion back then was the dash or lack of it means nothing.

Mike, I used the repro wires on my 72 SB with no problems and went through judging at the chapter level, thus far with no. problems.
