69 Rear View mirror

I am in the process of replacing the mirror glass on my mirror following the procedure in Volume 36 Number 4 Spring 2010 Corvette Restorer. The mirror came out without any problems and I am now cleaning the rubber edge. What I have a problem with is the rotating ball that attaches the mirror to the windshield. It is pitted and does not move freely. Are there any tricks or lubricants to help free up the movement? Any help would be appreciated.

A little WD40 on the ball. I then put a small screwdriver through the screw hold on to the SS mirror body. Hold the body with a towel, so you don't cut your self, then move the ball around until its free.
