Re: Got a strange call this morning...

He would have trouble getting more than a few hundred dollars for that set up. To everyone but you, the tranny is useless and the motor is nothing special. You didn't say what is in the car now but I'm willing to bet it is a way better combination than what was stock. If all you're going to do is put it under a bench just so you can say you have the original stuff, I wouldn't give him more than $500 for everything (maybe up to $1000 if I was feeling rich). He must have been high when he told you $5500.

Brian's answer looks good to me too. My first thought had something about where the sun don't shine, but with Brian's words, you may end up with it.

Mark, you could have a correctly dated block re-stamped, buy a set of heads and re-stamp a 3 speed for a whole lot less than 5k.

I purchased a set of flint heads, correct date, that were perfect for my April 63 250hp car for $80.00.

        I agree with Brian.

Tell him that it should have come with the car when you purchased it. Tell him you assumed that it had the original drive train and now you feel that he has committed dishonest fraud. Tell him you will be willing to pick up the evidence now and keep him out of litigation if he gives you $500.
          It's a good life!

            Mark,

I agree with Brian, offer him 1,000 for all and be done with it. He is trying to squeeze you. That offer is fair for a motor you will need to overhaul if it's even usable.

If I were in this situation, and really wanted the parts, but refused to seriously overpay, I would decide what high retail to any other buyer would be, say $1000, and tell him that is what you feel it is worth. Then tell him you are willing to pay a small premium, maybe $1500 total, but you just are not in a position to pay more. If he rejects it thank him for contacting you and let him know you understand that he needs to get all he can for it and that your offer stands in case it is the best offer he recieves. We know no one else will pay the premium you will so he may just call you back someday. Don't put him on the defensive as that will only cause him to dig in and maybe even sell it for less to someone else. No guarantee this approach will work, but if you decide you are not going to be squeezed this may work for you.

I think Larry's advice is best. Play it straight. Tell him the facts. You now are the owner of this car. To be able to reunite its Org. drivetrain trans and engine. Is a goal/dream you would very much like to achieve. If he's reasonable. Not a car turner But a Car guy. He'll understand. But squeezing you 5K I wonder. Pay a little more 1500 etc. Address the 800LB Gorilla. Tell him Look you wanta get as much as you can. I want as cheap as I can get it. So lets see what it'll take. He may stand firm. Then walk out Leaving him w/ I'll wire the funds asap The moneys here. I hope to hear from you. Good Luck.

Mark, As others have already stated, that set-up is worthless and undesirable to everyone but you. An offer of $1,000--$1,500 has got to be the the best offer this guy will get and he probably knows this. Let him sit on your offer. It probably wont be long before he accepts it or counters with something more realistic. Good luck

I agree but maybe 2K tops. He's not going to get it from anyone else.

I can buy good running 327's all day long for $500 or less. Why give someone $2K for something he won't be able to sell?

WOW Mark you got a load of advice and all good. I would go look at what he has, this way your looking at what your getting and most of the time you get more for less in person, if its your stuff and looks good , PUT the CASH on the table and ask him if he wants the money or the motor, now or never. I offer him 1250 and go up to 1500 if you have to, and tell him hes Not going to get anywhere near that from anyone else. Phil 8063

To be sure you are the one who winds up with it.

Yes I did get a lot of good advice, Thanks! This owner was not the guy I purchased the car from. The guy lives near Buffalo and I am in CT. I am leaning towards the 2k price as my very best offer! I gave him my email address and asked him to snap a few pics.

Mark, go there with the cash (all 100's) and lay it out on the table so he can see all of it. Then stop talking. He will take it. Works every time.

Steve has SUPERB advice. That is exactly how I bought my barn-find '67 big block convertible. An old wrinkled grocery sack with one hundred dollars bills bundled inside. It speaks volumes when dealing. Kind of does the talking for you.
If you're confortable going clear up to $2K, you are offering very, very top money.

For price comparison, an out of state friend of mine has a complete, never rebuilt 327 out of a 1964 fuelie that was totalled in the 1970s. It's been crated all these years. It's only missing the Rochester FI unit. A year ago or so, he decided to sell it and offered it to me. The price ........$3,500.

That was too high for me. I'm patiently waiting until the price levels down to what I'm confortable with...
