Got a strange call this morning...

Received a call from a past owner saying he has my original motor and trans. The motor and trans have been in his shop since he removed it back from 93. He is now closing the doors of his place and was wondering if I was interested? My original motor and trans was only a 327 250, and the trans is a 3speed. That's how my 64 was configured back then. Granted only the bottom line power set up. The question is what is a fair price to pay for these items? I am thinking they both need to be rebuilt, but he says all is there. The other thing is my car was born in Late November 63, what stampings would I be looking for on the engine and trans? Sorry for war& peace, but help would be appreciated!

A derivative of you VIN is stamped on the trans and the engine pad.

The 250 hp engine is essentially a passenger car engine and the 3 speed is the standard. Most everyone upgraded to the 4 speed or the automatic.

If in fact they are originally from your car you probably want them, even if you do not install them in the next 10 years. If all parts are there, I'll just guess at a price between 750 and 1000. You did say both items need to be rebuilt.

Search the archives for pictures of exactly where the stamps are.

Hi Mark I dont know what your financial level is, but if I had that chance I would BUY IT there is only ONE orig motor. You dont need to buy the trans, but I would, the block is stamped RC manual trans works for 4 speed also. To buy a block, broach and stamp it could cost over two grand easy. Phil 8063

Thanks guys! The funny thing is years ago I contacted this past owner and the guy was tuff to get any info from him about the car. I told him I would give him a call back tonight. I do want the motor and trans back! Just hope we can come up with a fair price. Thanks again and I will post how it goes down.

Just got off the phone with him! He wants $5,500 for engine and trans. He knows that I am the only one that has that kind of need for the set up. He won't sell the engine separate. Know what do I do!! Crap....
Had a feeling it would not be cheap but for what it is?

                  Mark,

Take advantage of the opportunity to purchase the original motor. It's only worth good $$$ to the current car owner and you can bet he knows that, other than that he will not get good money for it. Be fair and buy everything you can that came with your car.

He will probably like to see the car and engine reunited so explain to him you concern about overhaul costs and see if he is reasonable.

Keep us informed how you make out, good luck..

I'd tell him to keep it at that price and but let him know I have 1,000.00 waiting if he changes his mind. JMHO

Mark, my $ .02 . If you have to rebuild both eng an trans you could end up with $10 k in a base engine and trans to put in a 64 vette , unless you have money to burn tell him your not interested at that price , like others have said that motor is worth very little to everyone but you . Would be diff if it were a fullie . Stan

Its your car and money but if it were me I'd tell him to take a hike. That engine and trans holds value only to your car. To anyone else it's a 327 and unwanted 3 speed. If he had a chance to sell it in the past I suspect he would have.

If you think you really want it go for it but I like the thought of a fixed offer much lower. Not sure I'd even go $1000 for it. For $5500 you can build a heck of a engine, you lived without the original engine all this time and I'm sure it didn't affect your feeling driving the car.

He's squeezing at that price, I think I'd pass.
