John , So therefore there is no need to put an inline fuse because ther,s nothing in the manual or wiring diagrams regaurding the need for a fuse . Thanks.................. Elio

      Elio,

I think John is pointing out how the 64 was wired from the factory. Terry and I were suggesting an improvement to your wiring. You can bet there was a reason GM added a fuse for the lighter in 67. A 14 AWG wire is good for 15 A maximum. So 15 A is the maximum fuse that could be used. How much current is the lighter supposed to draw? If it were me, I would measure the current draw of the lighter, then use a fast blow fuse twice the value of that measurement (as long as that's below 15 A).

Elio, If you intend to have your car judged you can find quite a few places to hide the added fuse, but the closer to the fuse block it is the more protection you will have -- you are not just protecting the lighter, but also the wire going to the lighter. It will be harder to hide nearer the fuse block however.

Of course you could hide it in plane sight by using one of the unused slots in the fuse block and connecting the wire to that fuse. I doubt many judges would note the additional fuse.

If you don't have the means to measure the current draw of the cigarette lighter, I would put in a ten amp fuse and call it good unless it keeps blowing as you use the lighter.

Terry,Joe,John, I think i,ll install a fuse inline close to the fuse box if not from the fuse box to protect the wire as sugested by Terry. Thanks for your help and this is a great TDB to be invovled in. Elio

Re: New Member with some questions

After following this thread, I went out and went under the dash to look at my ignition switch, and it does have a light integrated into the switch and the bulb comes on with the dash lights. My question is, what is supposed to be lighting up? I see little leaks of light around the circumference of the switch but don't see any light to speak of coming out of where the key would go. Seems like kind of a dumb question, but I didn't see any old threads that addressed this one.
