Top Tank Radiator Frame Applications 60-61?

    Hi all,

I know that there are two radiator frames, one for the regular copper radiator and the other for the top tank radiator. I've seen the one for the copper radiator off the car, but not the one for the top tank.

What are the differences between the two frames? Will a copper fit the top tank frame one and will a top tank fit the copper frame one?

    Thanks,

    Bob

    Bob,

About 10 years ago, I wanted to replace my copper radiator with a top tank unit and was not aware of the support difference. It did not work in my '61. Contact DeWitt radiators. Their good to work with and will have the answers for you

Standard support - top brace is straight, drain hole in the bottom is on the pass. side.

Top tank support - top brace is bent on each end moving the brace forward approx. 1" from the rest of the support, drain hole is on the drivers side.

Standard rad. will fit top tank support. Top tank rad. will not fit standard support.

The hood is also different in order for the top tank rad. to fit. It was changed in 1960 and not all have the newer design. Here is a picture that shows the differences. Notice the change in the forward edge. https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...=hood&uid=6809

        Jim,

This is good information and from your description, knowing that GM was using up left over parts, my '61 has a top tank support with a copper radiator but I still could not make the top tank conversion. DeWitt offered a modification but I elected to not pursue this. Also, be careful with the clear plastic sight tube. They are were not very tight.

As additional information, I purchase the '61 aluminum radiator package with expansion tank, and then realized that my 1960 style hood would not work with aluminum. DeWitt was kind enough to offer a full refund and I just stayed with my original copper.

Lesson learned was to understand a refund policy.
