    Ignition Switch

I very much appreciate all the assistance and tech help I get from everyone. It looks as though I need a new ignition switch as the fuel quantity and temp gauges are powered on with the switch off. Does anyone know a good source to get a quality part? Are there any new OEM switches out there available for purchase? One other question...I noticed in the archives that quite a few of you run Robertshaw thermostats. Are they available at local parts stores? Thank you.

Jim, I have just been using the 180* thermostat from O'Reilly's.

      60-62 Ignition Switch

      Jim,

One place that has some NOS switches is Werner's Corvettes in Florida. The page on Werner's website for switches is:

The Delco # for the '60-'62 ignition switch is D-1493, or GM # 1116577. Werner's doesn't list a price for the '60-'62 switch, so he may not have any, but it says to call for info. I've bought several things from Werner's over the years and I've been pleased with what I got.

        Jim,

Have you checked the wiring against the manual? I recently looked at mine and it was not wired correctly. In my case the cigarette lighter didn't function and had a wire missing, the wire was connected between the ignition switch and the Ammeter. This is a replacement switch so I'm sure you'll be able to find a functional replacement. You might also take your old one apart (tricky but it can be done), I found that mine had a bad rivet which was easily repaired.

Make sure that the two wires along the outside are in the appropriate places. There are three spades on the back of the switch along the outside circumference, but only two wires connect to those. If I recall, that may cause the issue that you have.

The original switch can be repaired as other GM cars used the same "guts" I wrote an article for the "restorer" on this about 10 years or so ago. If you need help, drop me an email and I'll try to help you out. First check Rev Ernst's post regarding the proper wiring sequence. The problem you are having is not a typical failure mode for the switch itself.
