    1960 dash pad replacement

Looking for info from those that have been there, done that when it comes to replacing the dash pad on a 1960. I have this on my "things to do" list and need some instructions / pointers.

    Thanks,

    Tom

    Tom,
There have been multiple articles in the Restorer on this subject, if you do not have the CD or originals let me know. It has been 25 years since I did mine so the limited advice I have is if you put weights on after gluing it be sure to distribute the weight - I have small indents in mine. Good luck, Don H.

      Thanks Don,

I'll have to pick up the CD. I have the CD for my C3 and it has helped a bunch. Off to the NCRS store................

        Re: 1960 dash pad replacement

        Tom,

I believe there are posts on dash pad installation in the archives as well. My only advise is to go sparingly with the glue. After careful triming, I used the 3-M spray-on adhesive and followed the directions on the can. Following the directions was not the best idea. I applied a full coat on the inside of the pad, then a full coat on the fiberglass dash and finally, after a short period of time (as per directions) a second coat on the inside of the pad. I had two helpers attempt placement, but as soon as contact was made the pad stuck, still needing to be moved another 3 or 4 inches. So much for the first pad. It was destroyed trying to get proper placement . The second attempt (after investing in another expensive pad) was successful. Since the mirror, the gauge pod and the dash insert (by the grab bar) hold the pad in place along with the windshield, I used very little glue. Most glue was placed by the windshield edge as that is were the pad typically first separates. I used short pieces of wood with holes drilled in them to bolt the leading edge of the pad (under the windshield) down while it dried. The job is easily do-able, just go easy with the glue!

be certain to install the grab bar brackets before the pad.mike

Note too difficult but tedious, very tedious. Take your time when t******* foam, a little at a time.

                Re: 1960 dash pad replacement

Any recommendations for a source of the dash pad?

When I got the car it came with a service replacement pad from GM that has the speaker and defroster cut outs. It was probably bought in the early 80's and has been sitting in the box since. It does have some marks in it, sort of like someone tried to wipe it down with a cleaner that left residue and won't come out. So I'm a bit reluctant to use this one.

The last pad I installed was from Al Knoch and it was fine. He's done a good job in getting rid of the excess foam padding but there is still t******* required. I'm not sure if there are other manufacturers of the pad or if they all come from Knoch. I'm sure other will comment on this. Good Luck Rich
