My car came with the wing nuts on the back of the shield and a hex head bolt with an "L" on it. Is this correct? Build date Aug-61.

Re: 62 Ignition shield
The Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide (fifth edition) states that the distributor shield is attached with: three cadmium or zinc plated 1/4-20X1/2" dished hex-head ("E" logo in head) bolts with external tooth washer.
That is how it is attached on my late 62.- Top

Re: 62 Ignition shield
Except in formal judging situations, you'll appreciate the wing nuts on the back as they are so much easier to deal with when removing and re-installing the top shield. Virtually all my '61/'62 encounters had this set-up (including my own early '61). Not correct for judging, but .........- Top

Re: 62 Ignition shield
John,
Human nature. The moment we discover something that works better and we are sure it won't ever matter to anyone else (who thought we'd be "judging" these cars back then) the changes occur. That's also why the JG never represents itself as the ultimate authority - short of definitive proof, we're all just making the best guess we can!- Top

Re: 62 Ignition shield
John,
Have you ever worked on a car and dropped a nut/bolt that disappeared? And the car was nothing more than a daily driver--you grab something nearby that fits and you use it to finish the task. And 6 weeks later you don't remember that, let alone 40 years. That's how those things happen.
You can "dought" (doubt) judging manuals if you want. You have to decide, if you believe the part was the original on the car, whether or not to leave it on and lose judging points, or to change the parts to what the manual says. The manual is not infallible. However, the manual is a compilation of the best understanding of a number of veteran observers/restorers of that specific model year category.
For example, I've been studying 62's and 61's since 1974. I've owned 28 62's and 9 61's. I've looked at over a thousand of them and evaluated them for originality. (that was easier to do in 74 than now). Regarding 62's, I've studied cars from serial number 9 to serial number 14,530. And I'm not the only one that is fanatical about making sure that what we have in the manual is as correct as can possibly be. I've chaired two manual revisions and taken part in every 61-2 manual except the very first. We take what we do very seriously.
Doubt if you want. Cast aspersions if you want. But don't become like too many people have--"I have one and this is the way mine is, therefore it is right and no one else knows anything."
Regards,
Mike

Re: 62 Ignition shield
Mike, My apologies to the forum for getting off track, plus my spelling is going downhill as well. I guess I do too much reading on the forum. We read that the AIM is not necessarily correct versus the judging manual, etc. in some cases. My wife says I stay confused. Everyone keep up the good work. I hope everyone has a great New Year coming up!- Top
