    Question: 63 differential numbers

Looking to verify if following rear diff #s would be reasonable for my '63 with VIN#107217 (approx Jan 21, '63 assembly date).

Casting code on diff is L222 (Dec 22, 1962), assembly stamp CE 1 16 63 (Jan 16, 1963). With my cars assembly on Jan 21, is that too close? That is would 5 days between diff assembly, and car assembly in St Louis, be considered reasonable?

I've also been told assembly numbers on rear differential are not checked as part of judging, so maybe no big deal.... but can anyone verify/clarify these numbers as reasonable for a Jan 20/21 car? Any help much appreciated.

    Mel,

My '63 rolled off the assembly line on May 14 (according to the NCRS Report). The assembly date stamp for the engine was May 8, transmission was May 3 and differential was May 7.

    Hope this helps.

    Jon

Thnx Jon. Your dates are pretty close (7 days)... and I know yours is an original, so maybe 5 days isnt too close after all.

        Mel,

5 days is probably OK - maybe others will chime in with their info.

What are the assembly dates on your engine and transmission?

My car was also assembled on May 14th. I can't look at the car right now but I believe the rear was cast on Dec 22 and assembled on May 5 CJ or 308.

Jan... engine assembled Jan 2nd (F0102RE), as was transmission on Jan 2nd (WA23-1)...block L282 (Dec 28th, '62)... body was E2 (Jan 2nd). I've been told rear-end parts were trucked to St louis (11 hr run) so Jan 16 is OK. Seems pretty close to me, but I guess it works OK.

Mel, the E2, for a 63, means the second week in January not January 2nd.

I'm ok with the differential date.

              Good luck.

Mel -- While you're looking at diff. numbers that are not judged, check casting # on your rear cover [where it bolts to the X-member]. Should be 3830303; read upside down. This can be seen at an angle, behind the spare tire tub.

Same part # for '64 and early '65s.

Harry... thnx for the correction on body number (E2=2nd week of Jan). Learn something new every day... thats what makes this fun.

Wayne... thnx for cover number... will double check soon as I move it away from garage wall so I can get to it. Isn't their a date on the cover, too? Right side ...viewable from the rear?

                  Appreciate all the help, guys.
