    1960 antenna mount location

    Merry Christmas all!

I recently picked up a 1960 that came from the estate of the original owner. Thanks to Santa, today I received the TIMJG and have been reading through it.

I have the original order sheet that shows the car was ordered with the radio option, but the antenna is mounted on the right rear quarter, not the left rear as the TIMJG states. The AIM (thanks to Santa again!) also shows it on the right rear. I looked through the original operations manual that came with the car and it has a picture of the antenna and it is shown on the left quarter.

I did a quick search of the archives and found reference to a car that was at BJ which had a hole for the antenna on the right.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Tom

PS: Now that I am armed with reference material, I'm sure I'll be asking lots of 1960 questions..............

    Re: 1960 antenna mount location

    Tom,
I believe all factory installed antenna were installed on the rear left fender.

Nolands book on 58 to 60 Corvette production shows all cars all with the antenna on the left rear.
Possibly the car had a antenna installed on the right later in it's life.

        Bruce,

        I did note that also.

In the owners manual on page 13 there is a picture of the antenna and it shows it on the right rear and the text says "Antenna is located just ahead of the tail light on the right rear fender".

Could the car have been ordered with the radio and the dealer installed the antenna?

          Tom,
I think that cars ordered with radios came with factory installed antennas.
          But who knows.
We need some expert help on this issue.

Hi Tom I think you can take it to the bank, the antenna in on the rear drivers side fender PERIOD, never seen any 56-62 corvette with radio any place else in my life. The vin plate could be on the door frame or on the column and the engine pad could have the vin stamped on the pad or not this stuff changed in 1960 but not the radio antenna. Phil 8063

              Phil,

              Thanks for the decisive reply.

I'll chalk this up to mystery #1 as I try to sort this car out.

'60 AIM clearly shows the installation on the driver's rear fender, along with the routing of the antenna cable along the drivers side upper area then down unfer the sill on the driver's side. AIM sheet FOA 102, sheet #1. Also shows the static collectors in the front wheel hubs on the same page.

                  Tom,
One more thing, check the inside of the rear drivers side fender for any signs that there was once an antenna installed. Look and feel for irregularities in the fiberglass.

                    Bruce,

Virgin fiberglass on the left side.

Thanks for all of the replies..............

After looking through this today, here is what I "think" happened:

                    1. Order copy shows radio as an option
                    2. Pictures show radio is NOT an Wonderbar
                    3. Connection to radio does not have the plastic connector that plugs into the harness.

Could the radio have been dealer installed? I would be convinced that the owner installed the radio if it were not for the "radio" line item on the order sheet.

Radios were not "Automatic". They were Delco. Bubba been there. -Dan-

That sheet is the dealership writeup sheet I believe, used for recording the agreement with the buyer, as opposed to the order from the dealership to have the car built. Note the dates of 6/4 with delivery 6/5, only could happen with a car in stock. Also the non-Delco radio (let alone wonderbar) is a sure clue to a dealer-installed radio.

Excellent points, Clup! Plus, the sales sheet simply says 'radio' and doesn't qualify which/what kind of radio. The signal seeking, push button, Wonderbar was the top of the line Chevy radio in those days and you'd think that would be documented IF a real McCoy wonderbar radio went with this 'deal'...
