    63 starter finish question

Was the nose on the 63 4 spd. manuel starter painted or natural, The judging manuel doesn't seem to comment on the nose. Thanks, Ed & Merry X-mas

Ed, I don't know what the 5th edition says about the starter details. You didn't ask or tell but how are you treating the solenoid.
Originally they were black on a 63 but some think the solenoid should be bare zincad.
Now for a dumb question. What is the nose? The rather flat front with bushing boss of the starting motor -aka end plate then I believe it's typically painted. JD

JD, I was refering to the aluminun housing part of the starter( Where the bendix engages w/flywheel area),As for the solonoid it says in the JM either way cad. or painted black,

Here's a shot of a new one on a new engine about to be dropped on the chassis at the St Louis assembly line in 63. Black painted solenoid.

The drive end housing is also painted but not the part that is not visible when the starter is installed.

I don't think the starter mounting bolts were washer head, although the one in the pic appears to be. I think that's just a lock washer. I think the washer head design bolt came later, possibly 64 or 65?
