    Windshield Question...again

    Hi,
I want to use the rubber spacers to mount my windshield as per the AIM. However, I'm unclear as to exactly how they are installed. Do you put them in the bead of urethane, essentially covering them with it. Or do they go towards the outer perimeter, not in the bead?. This whole thing is a little confusing to me, and I want to get it right. I have a few extra days to research this now, as today when I was lifting my windshield off the car to set on the horses, one suction cup let go, and you know the rest of the story. Thanks, Mark

Sorry to hear about your windshield breaking. Where are you getting the reproduction from? I would be interested to hear how it compares to the original, if you were able to keep it, in logo, tinting, and tinting arrow.

    Thanks, Terry

I "buried" mine at the upper outer corners, the adhesive covers them up. The lower section seemed to find its own level with the locating clips and the top of the firewall.
Do a dry run first! I had to use thicker blocks to get the w/s trim to be tight to the glass...I think I used 3/8. Others have used other thicknesses. You have one shot to get it right, or you will have a big mess.

Thanks for the input. There seemed to be a couple possible ways to do it. Burying it makes more sense. I got the glass from Auto City Glass, I think is the name. They are from Minnesota. If you want, I can get you the phone number. The date stamping etc, looked quite good. Mark

          Mark,

Were you able to keep the original to compare it to the reproduction? Usually the logo is not the issue on reproductions. The problems are the tinting line, the location of the tinting arrow and possibly the thickness of the glass. I was hoping you were able to compare your original to the reproduction.

            Terry,
The car had a non original windshield already. I have original glass on some of my other cars. I would say that the thickness is not quite the same, and possibly other things. I don't know what alternative there is. I haven't seen any NOS glass out there. Mark

              Hi Mark,
Your thought about NOS glass made me wonder where the glass came from years ago when some needed to be replaced. Was the Chevrolet dealer a source, or did all glass come through a local auto glass company?
I worked in a body shop for a year back then and don't remember the glass coming from the dealer, but from the glass company instead. In fact, the repaired car was often taken to the glass company if it needed to have a windshield installed.
I'd think if a person found a NOS windshield it would be easier to buy a car it would be suitable for than to find/buy a suitable piece of NOS glass for a particular car.
              Regards,
              Alan

                Re: Windshield Question...again

                Alan,
My point exactly. To find a NOS windshield with correct date coding and in perfect shape would be almost impossible. So we are left with what the aftermarket can supply, to whatever degree of correctness that may be. Merry Christmas, Mark
