Is it raining at Joe Lucia's house??

I hope Joe is OK out there.

Actually, we have not had much rain, at all. It was supposed to rain all week but the last real rain we had was on Sunday. It's supposed to be sunny for the next two days with highs about 60 degrees F. Another storm is supposed to come in on Saturday, though.

Most of the rain has gone north and south of us. The big storms are, apparently, "splitting" and sparing the SF Bay Area in the process. This is especially true of the southern SF Bay Area where I live.

Southern California has taken the brunt of it. Over a 2 week period they should get almost as much rainfall as they normally get in an entire year!

Good to hear you are not flooding in your area. It looked like a huge muddy mess on the news.

It would have to get very deep to flood up to Joe's house. From his back porch you can see a long way.

He might watch water and mud slide by, but it wouldn't come up from below.

It hasn't been as bad here as the media makes it out to be. Sure some roads have washed out and a mud slide here and there but dude, that would happen anywhere that it rains this much and don't plan for it lol.

....talked to Jim Gessner on the phone earlier. He said they got 15" of rain in 6 days, and 17' (that's feet) of snow in the mountains!

Re: Is it raining at Joe Lucia's house??

The Los Angeles basin has received nearly half its median annual (about 15") rainfall in the last six days - something in the 6-8+ inch range depending on location. The surrounding foothills/mountains got more as is typical. Mammoth Mountain in the southern Sierras got something on the order of ten feet of snow at the top and seven at the bottom. The northern Sierras - like Donner Pass - have also received near record rain and snow.

It rained continuously - drizzle to heavy - from last Friday to yesterday morning and finally began letting up in the afternoon.

The biggest storm of the series, Tuesday night through Wednesday morning, turned out to be more localized than predicted. Downtown Laguna Beach got flooded, which has happened before as it is at the end of a canyon. They got about 4" in 12 hours.

At my place in Redondo Beach I had to go up on the roof in the dark and rain Friday night to affect a temporary repair to a small leak in my 36 year old built-up roof, and it was successful.

Saturday afternoon I had to go back up to repair a couple of rain gutter brackets that pulled away from the rafter tails. It was only drizzling at the time.

With every thing secured, I spent a relaxed Saturday evening consuming adult beverages while I tended the fire and listened to Pink Floyd. About 10:30 PM I went out back to fetch more firewood and managed to lock myself out of the house! I don't know if it was the adult beverages or Pink Floyd that messed me up - maybe both.

Things will be drying out, today, and some rain is predicted Christmas night. Some rain is also in the extended forecast late next week, but it looks good for the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl (Go Badgers!) New Year's Day.

I'm glad this week is near over. In fact, I'll be glad when this year is over, but I probably say that every year.

It's noteworthy that this is a "La Nina" year. The eastern equatorial Pacific is cool, and our typical winter weather pattern is relatively dry - just the opposite of "El Nino" when the easter equatorial Pacific is warm and we get winter deluges, so this much rain this quickly was totally unexpected.

I've already read a news story where some bozo (from NASA) blamed it on "global warming", but the bottom line is we can't predict next week's weather or longer term climate any better than we can predict the stock market over similar time frames.

maybe this will help some of the dried up lakes where the boats were setting on the muddy bottom.

My roof pitch is only 1/10, so once up there, it's no big deal. The most hazardous part is the trip up and down the ladder.
