Re: Frist time what to do
Hi Richard !! Welcome to the site. You have locked and loaded quite a question. We might need a little more information on your car. Do you want to rebuild the car, or the engine, or what. If it is a wrong motor car with no paperwork, it will most likely be always, just that. Not that there is anything wrong with that. If you really like the car. Make it the way you like it, drive it and have fun.
If you are considering diving in on a full blown restoration, you might want to think about doing a correct "real" car with documentation. Those cars usually command more money and are more worth the $$$$ spent to restore them.
You may also want to consider buying one already restored or all original too. Sometimes that makes better financial sense. Also think about how long a restoration can take. Nothing is more frustrating than having a Corvette in "paint jail" forever waiting completion. Been there.
I guess it depends on the car you are starting with. Tell us some more about it or post some pictures and let's talk about it !Tom Hendricks

Re: Frist time what to do
I agree with Tom. If it's a running driving car I would enjoy it as is and tinker around while you're having fun. Make sure the safety items are in proper order, like brakes, steering, etc. Spend the money on those things first to keep it going, then play with the other things as time and finances allow.
If it's not running & driving.......plan on lots of money and time.
I bought my '59 25 years ago, and over the years between sneakers for the 3 boys and similar priorities, I managed to do something every winter to improve and restore it. It's not perfect, nom, only a 3rd flight in '08 at a Regional to have some fun and learn, by I drive it as much as I can.
Also, as Tom asked, what exactly needs "rebuild"?
