the plug on back of gauge has bright light power on pink, black ground, and dim light power on green going to sensor. any input would be greatly appreciated.

What happens if you touch the sensor wire to ground?

      Vince -

Quick gauge function check - with the key "on", engine off, remove the connector at the sending unit - the gauge should "peg" to full cold. Then ground the terminal in the connector to the engine, and the gauge should "peg" to full hot. If that checks out, the sending unit is faulty.

it shoots the needle all the way right(hot). Bad sensor you think?

Yup, or badly installed. Should be nothing that might electrically insulate the sensor from ground, like teflon tape.

the gauge moves just over the 100 degree mark then stops.

If that's the result of the test I noted in post #5, the gauge needs attention.
