Bob, The C4 era vettes had many different ways that the cooling fans operated, I don't have a wiring diagram in front of me for your year, but I would say that sometimes its just one fan cooling the engine and both fans running with the A/C on. and there maybe a built infail safe to the computer if the engine runs beyond a certain temp.this will have both fans operating.

Besure to check all the normal things that may cause overheating, coolant level, proper mixture, rad. pressure cap operating pressure, don't forget that alot of these cars operating temps are higher that the older cars , the GM engineers like the higher temps for emisson reasons. the cooling fans sometimes don't even come on til about 227 degrees. use the peramiters of the temp gage and consider what its says is normal. If its in the red zone, theres a problem or even just before it.

It's been awhile since I had a C-4 but I thought 230 was the normal operating temp range. Thought the fans kicked in about that temp

The primary fan should come on at 228; the secondary on at 238.

If you turn your air conditioning on, your fans should come on if they are operational.
One cool day driving the interstate in my 96 LT-4 and not using air conditioning, had to stop on the interstate because of an accident ahead. Watched the temp guage climb above the 190 range. Stopped the increase in temp by turning on the air conditioning. I did this knowing the fans would start working. I did not want the temp to reach the temperature in which the fan/fans would operate not using air conditioining.

It may not be the same for Corvettes, but for B-bodies with the LT1 turning on the AC just runs one fan (I think secondary) unless the engine temperature rises enough for the other to come on.

Also on the B-bodies, unplugging the engine temperature sensor (on the B-bodies it is on the water pump) while the engine is operating will turn on both fans after about 30 seconds if the fuses and relays are functioning. It is a good quick and dirty test of fan function.

It can be a little disconcerting to see the temperature gauge climb into the red zone before the computer turns the fan(s) on during normal operation.

All that sounds different than B-bodies. I better stay our of this one.

thanks to all who answered my heating problem. it turns out that: 1-there are 2 relays on the radiator shroud 2-the primary fan comes on at 230 degrees 3-the secondary fan is set to come on at 238 or when you turn on the ac 4-i have to get used to the corvettes operation,it turns out they have their own set of rules,i will get a operational manual so i better understand how they work.

If you really want to know about your 93 Corvette, purchase the GM service manual, the one written by GM for servicing/working on your Corvette. My 1996 service manual consists of two books with a combined weight of 9 pounds. One book is just over 1 3/4 inches thick and the other is 1 1/8 inches. The book or books are available from www.helminc.com .

                    Re: lt1 running hot 230 & higher

thanks Jim: as of this morning i ordered the 2 manuals you suggested for my 93 ruby. i discovered a small leak in a surge tank line, going to the radiator,a local radiator repair shop does custom work and will be able to repair it when parts arrive. this corvette has only 13,000 miles on it and has not run much in the last five years or so. i will be alert to that fact as other things may occur form lack of use. I live in new england and will run it all winter when roads are free of salt and snow. thanks again for your help,i'm sure we will talk again. bob pierce
