E 58 crank Balancer
Is this bolted on or pressed on, need to put the 1/8 spacer on to line up pulley. Thanks Brad.

Pressed on. Buy a cheap puller from HF or any auto store. It will spin them right off. -Dan- -

Brad,
Because these were pressed on, keep this in mind.......If has been off and on a few times, it may loose it's ability to remain on. The internal surface of the balancer is milled with a ribbed pattern to keep it attached. If the engine is out you may want to drill the crank for the 7/16-20 bolt & thick washer used on the later engines. If you are getting judged just remove the bolt beforehand.
So.....I need to go back to 1986 and tell you my harmonic balancer story. Shortly after I got my '59 in June, I discovered it had a wrong 2 groove HB pulley so I changed it to the correct single groove pulley. Unknown to me at the time the balancer was becoming loose, so changing the pulley must have worsened it.
It was a Friday, beautiful summertime July weather in New England. I decided to take my '59 to work that morning. On the way home after work I got on the highway ramp for about a 20 minute ride home. Wife and I planned a dinner night out in the Corvette, babysitter all lined up, etc. I was excited about the upcoming night out.
Just as I got on the highway, all of a sudden I heard this loud banging and clanging sound. I looked in my outside mirror and saw this round orange & black thing spinning along side me then proceeded to pass me in the left lane and end up in the median.
Yep, it was my harmonic balancer. Hard to believe I didn't run over it and do lots of damage. Fortunately no one was behind me either.
After scouring the median I found it. Boy was it banged up. My nice new pulley was trashed. Lots of friendly people stopped to help and one stopped at a pay phone and called for a flatbed. A few hours later car was home. We had takeout pizza for dinner that night.

p.s. I bought a new service replacement HB, then years later when I rebuilt the engine I had the crankshaft drilled and tapped for the bolt. Sadly I tossed my original balancer back in '86.

I posted on here this spring about my bal comming off in my garage .Finaly got around to replacing it with a new one , noticed that with it drove on all the way on that the snout of the crank is back inside of the balancer a little more than 1 inch . Is this normal ? The old one only went the same amount . Would feel better if it went on the whole lenght of the bal .

I have a original balancer on a '57 ..548 engine and I just measured apx 1 1/4" from the front face of the balancer to the snout of the crank.

I will 1/8 washer the backside of the bolts on the pulley for a simple remedy. Thanks, Brad.

Brad,
I don't know if that's a good idea. The center of the pulley is flanged and sits inside the balancer hole for alignment. I have seen pulleys get ruined with elongated mounting bolt holes when they are even attached properly. Without the centering, it could eventually wobble out of proportion.
The 1/8" spacer is available from most suppliers. Are you sure it is missing. What is not lining up?

Seems the bottom pulley is about 1/8 back, closer to crank than water pump pulley, would this hurt fan belt alignment? Thanks, Brad.

Yes.........Your belt will wear out on the edge. That's why you need the 1/8" spacer on the crank, to bring out out to align properly.

Rich , never thanked you for measuring your balancer to crank thats what mine was . would feel better if more than half of the balancer were in contact with with crank .Comment
