Filter on left in the thumbnail pic [below the big pic] is a recent eBay purchase. It has the single groove notches on both end fittings. Box seems original and end flap reads "Weyerhauser Company, Middlebury", with a big "68" and smaller (in a clock arc) "10, 11, 12". I'm assuming late 1968 manufacture. Applications on the box are for Corvair Spyder / Monza '62-'64; -- no mention of Corvette.
One on the right, dimensionally identical, was purchased from a closing Chev dealer in Hawaii (while on vacation in 1978). I kept only the box end flap. Same part # 5650677 as above. I've been using it on my '65 L76 driver. Note NO notched fittings. According to parts history, 5650677 was to be replaced in service by 5650899 on 10-63. Would this be the silver-to-black change ?
Now the '65 TIM&JG calls for notched fittings on the black GF-90. Big picture below is an extreme blow-up of the filter on my '65 #04835 taken in May of 1968. The notches are more pronounced, but there's also the chance it had been changed over the 3_1/2 years since new. Running poorly, so I decided to R&R the fuel filter. Dealer said GF-90 no longer available, so ordered replacement (per P&A30) #5650899. It was a GF-99 ! Instructions said to crimp & solder 1/8" vent opening (recycle back to tank line ?) if not required [which I did]. The '65 AIM shows #5650703 for production, which has no record in the parts history or service catalogs.
Questions: what do the '62 and '63 guides say about the notches (yes or no) ? Some repro catalogs are offering the black GF-90's without notches as acceptable for judging. There seems to be some confusion, so what do the '62 thru '64 manuals call for ?
If the GF-90 was NLA in July 1965 (per my P&A30), then why does it appear in 1968 for the Corvair hi-perf ?
