Rare NOS pre-'70 ball bearing distib. housing

This just popped up on eBay [I've go no $ interest in this item] the link to the complete auction follows:

Recently we've discussed the wear pattern of the tach drive cross gear against the casting. Here's an NOS example of the inside machining of the thrust surface of the distrib. Note it is very lightly surfaced. This is an early production item example for the 1111263 distrib, before they began to drill the housing and install the nylon button, to eliminate subsequent wear. This design change happened sometime in calendar 1970.

This item would only be of interest to bidders of race exotica, as almost nothing is interchangeable with factory Corvette distributors.

Thanks for the heads up Wayne but for those that dont know that dist body is not machined for the vacuum advance, so its kinda useless unless you have a cross ram camaro or a old style race car. Phil 8063

this is most likely the dist. housing used with gear drive cams that caused a downward pull on the dist.shaft vs the upward thrust of the std dist.

Yes, it was. However, this distributor was never used for any PRODUCTION application. It was a SERVICE-only piece.

If someone buys this housing, what they're going to have is the housing as a curiosity item. Most of the parts necessary to build up this distributor are long-since discontinued and were only available for a very limited time anyway. They were never carried in regular P&A catalogs, either. I know of no source for reproduction parts for this distributor.

One curious thing that I note about this housing is that it appears to have the "360 degree" lower oiling groove. An NOS example of the distributor that this housing was used for that I have in my collection has the "270 degree" oiling groove. Every other example of this distributor that I've seen has that configuration, also.

Looks like a xmas present, not much interest, probably due to its non OEM status...

Yes, I remember it well, too. From holding with my fingers for so long that plastic grocery bag I had the box in, my two fingers were numb for about 10 days.
