    Odometer and day counter repair

    Hi Guys,

During the body-off resto we cleaned my dashcluster and all meters thoroughly. However after putting all back together the odometer and day counter still do not work.

Any suggestions? Should I order new ones of have them rebuild? If rebuilding is the best option what is the best source for parts?

    Thx

A common malady here is the tripometer reset cable can be 'sticky' from disuse and lack of 'exercise'. It's spring loaded and supposed to SNAP back to its fully out/engaged postion after a reset.

IF you catch the problem early, it can be as simple as removing the reset cable, cleaning it, applying fresh cable lube and 'exercising' it (round and round + in/out).

If the condition is NOT caught early, it can result in the odometer drive gear 'hanging' up (between engaged and disengaged positions) with gear clash resulting in damage. IF that's the case, it's time to send the cluster out for overhaul.

An 'in-between' fix you can attempt (flip a coin on the outcome), is to take the car for a short drive and PULL DOWN on the reset cable while you're in motion. If gear clash hasn't completely ruined the drive, you just might coax the system to engage and work again...

      Hi Jack,

sander and me cleaned and lubed the cables like you said...so I guess the overhaul is needed then. Snow has arrived so the in-between solutions I do not wanna try now...

But no source for overhaul overseas...any suggestions on that?

        Jack:
I have the same problem on my '69 -odometer and trip are frozen- but I can reset the trip with reset cable. Could your solution work here as well? Thanks.
        Jeff

The mechanics of the system are identical...
