    Best way to glue hood

I have a 67 coupe that just won Top Flight at the local Chapter event but one of the things I lost points for was that the webing on the underside of the hood is coming unglued from the hood itself. I understand this is a common problem but I was wondering it there was any suggestions for what kind of glue to use to repair it and/or any other tips for getting it fixed well.

    Thanks

    Charles -

The hood inner panel was only bonded to the outer skin around the outer periphery; the bracing portion used a "gumdrop" adhesive to avoid "bond burn" distortions in the highly-visible outer panel.

Jerry Fuccillo did an excellent post on using DAP Premium Polyurethane Roof and Flashing Sealer as a repair substitute for the original "gumdrop" adhesive; it's in the archives, titled "C2:Hood Gumdrop Adhesive", posted on Friday, May 19, 2006, at 1:41 AM. That post will give you the details.

Charles..This has been discussed at length and I used PL Brand Polyurethane Roof and Flashing Sealant. It remains flexible and really did an excellent job. After you apply put the hood down for 24 to 36 hrs. and it will cure. CAUTION DO NOT use an epoxy as it will leave marks on the outside of the hood. You can buy it at Lowes or Home Depot...Bill

        Charles,

        Here's the stuff to use:

The archives have temporarily lost their links to the photos. (I hope just temporarily)

Dig out the old gumdrop, which is a brownish color. Apply this stuff in one or two applications into the joints between the hood and hood frame. Trim it off like the old gumdrop while it is still workable. It fully cures in about 48 to 72 hours and is paintable.

But it is the same color as the blackout, so you don't have to paint it.

Get the solvent recommended with it for cleanup and to trim. This stuff sticks to anything and remains resilient.

Please post a picture of the bottom of the hood panel showing what the finished job should look like. A past attempt of bonding the braces to the hood skin using fiberglass panel adhesive has failed on my hood. It would be helpful to see what the correct repair should look like.

          Thank you,

          Randy

            Randy,

Not sure what a finished job should look like, but as requested, here is some photos of my polyurethane job on the hood to hood frame:

This one was just after I did it in 2006:

The blackout side of the hood was just cleaned off with Simple Green. Take note of the little vertical mark about 8" left of the hood brace. That's the reason I didn't repaint the underside with blackout.

            Here's a photo taken tonight:

After about 4 1/2 years the seals are still tight and the hood doesn't go up and down when you are driving. Note again the little mark 8" left of the hood brace.

Here's a closer shot of some of the seals today:

Now you can guess what that mark was, that convinced me not to re-blackout the hood. You won't find this in the judging guide, but it is a date stamp on the underside of the hood, and looks to me to be over the blackout:

There is also a closeup of one of the redone joints.

May 21, 1967, how can that be, if they applied the blackout during assembly.

My car is an AO Smith car with a body assembly date of June 19, 1967 and came off the St. Louis line on June 29. Looks to me like the blackout on the underside of the hood was applied before the body was assembled. Maybe it is one of those AO Smith things.

I wonder how many guys never noticed the date stamp on the underside of the hood on original unrestored cars?

Also note the inspection stamp on my original radiator in one of the photos. Honest, I did not redo it. You would be surprised what a little Simple Green will do to these old cars.

Thank you for the photos. My car is a May 67 Marina Blue convertible. I will look for the date stamp and let you know if I find anything.
