It could indeed be just that , and like everything as the tooling got older the line faded..

I expect it's the opposite: as the tooling got older the "line" APPEARED. I doubt that the "line" was a feature that was specified on the drawing for the part.

Yes the cover on the right is correct matches mine.

And there are vertical lines
