66 350 hp Timing Cover

Hey Guys,

I just took in my motor to the rebuilder, and he tells me I have the wrong Timing Cover . Mine is on the left. He tells me I need the one he has on the right .

Will smarter people than I tell me which is correct .

The cover on my 66 L-79 matches the one on the right, FWIW.

I'd say the one on the right, too. The one on the left looks like a 1969+ SHP small block tab. Besides the configuration issue, the timing marks on the tab will not indicate correctly with a pre-1969 balancer.

What should I pay for the correct one , and what is the one I have worth ?

you can purchase the correct tab only from paragon, then weld it on your old timing cover after removing the incorrect one and determining top dead center(let the machinst do the last step if you are unfamiliar with this step). think the tabs run about 10 or 15 bucks from paragon.mike

The 'original' from your car is well recognized as a '68-69 era part due to the configuration of the timing tab (trapezoidal in shape with Y-style reinforcement depression). There's no real question here...

And you know, Jim, you might SUCCEED with that argument! The last time I skimmed the C2 JG books there was virtually NO description of the various timing covers/timing tabs used on the mid-year cars...

I've wondered how in the heck NCRS pulled that one off as the C1 and C3 NTL's are pretty thorough in their textual & photo reference descriptions. Maybe nobody judges the timing cover(s) used on C2 cars????

First off thanks for the feedback !

Secondly, Do your's Have the vertical line in them ? The line that runs vertically across the hash marks .

Following Mikes tip , I looked up the "tabs" on the Corvette Vendors web sites , and they do indeed have them . However none show the vertical line , like my picture on the right does. So now I am even more confused. Should it be there , or not ?

Jim -- looked at a '63-5 cover I have that was used on a 6" dia. balancer (the degree marks are closer together than an 8"). I see a line there that I hadn't noticed before. Maybe part of the tooling process.

It could indeed be just that , and like everything as the tooling got older the line faded..
