    Re: Help with Trailer Tie-Downs

There was a time when I intended to do a story about these tie down locations for The Restores. I have photos of the C2, C3, & c4 locations, but never could find C1 locations. I looked as bare frames at swap meets and could see nothing. Either I was looking for the wrong thing (they were hiding in plane sight) or there are none on C1s.

A friend of mine tied down a 65 coupe using the half shafts in the rear. When we arrived at our destination we found a trailing arm shim on the floor of the trailer. The force of the tie down straps must have pulled the shim out. I would reccomend against using the half shafts for holding the car in place. Use the openings in the frame as the manufacturer intended.

Thanks Terry, you were the one that showed me the the C2 & 3 locations years ago. I think a Restorer article you were thinking of would be very useful for many.

As for the old girls, it sounds like we have gone through some of the same things trying to determine the frame tie down locations. So the question remains how did the General tie them down when they were shipped C1s by truck?

IMHO here is the best way to tie down a C-1. Other pics on thread "Trailering a C1 on open trailer".

The first time I trailered my 1970 I tied the rear straps to the half shafts. When I arrived at the meet I found the straps had slipped on the shafts and lost their tension and the car had moved sideways. The second time I trailered the car I wrapped the rear straps around the shock mounts. That held better, but I didn't like the straps rubbing on the shocks. One of those times one of the front straps was cut by the lower control arm.

After those experiences I went with the Chevrolet designed tie down locations, and haven't regretted it. The Z06 made the trip home from The Museum in a box, and it was tied down using the factory designed locations also. No regrets there either, and the thought of using those aluminum suspension parts to tie down the car just scares me.

Any problem with tying down the wheels and using the frame j-hooks at the same time?

                No problem, just overkill IMHO.
