Re: 1970 valve covers base motor
I have this set of base engine valve covers for 1970. They differ from the '71 and '72 driver side valve cover in that the oil cap used in 1970 is different than the rubber "OIL" plug used in '71 and '72. The hole for the '70 oil cap is slotted on each side whereas the hole for the '71-'72 OIL plug is perfectly round. I believe the passenger side valve cover is the same as '71 and '72. Unfortunately, I bought this set years ago from a so-called expert (who advertises in Driveline, BTW) who told me they were for my '71 and then wouldn't take them back about a year later when I told him they weren't for a '71 - apparently, I was supposed to buy these valve covers and install them immediately afterwards instead of waiting until I was ready to install them (had to get in my "sour grapes" line). Anyway, I got them all cleaned up and primed before I discovered they don't apply to my car. I believe these are also the same for the '68 and '69 small blocks. As I understand, they are supposed to be painted engine orange and there are not supposed to be any wire harness guides attached to the valve covers for those years. They use the standard valve cover "washers" and bolts.
