    C2 Interior Trim Paint

    There are not a lot of pieces (radio grill, window trim, steering column) but everyone's saying to use the interior dye/paint. My interior is red (1963 convertible) and was wondering if anyone knows of a better paint to use (versus dye) on my interior metal pieces.

    We have used PPG's Deltron DIU on the interior. We took a radio side panel and had them color match it and were able to repair a scratch on the area in front of the radio grill without having to paint the whole dash

      Paint suppliers from the era used the same paints as exterior surfaces, with appropriate amounts of flattener applied to achieve the appropriate gloss level. Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of the '63 info at hand, but if you can get a copy of the '63 Chevrolet PPG paint colors chart, I believe the info is on the back of the page.

        Thank you both (Dick & Bill) and acknowledge your responses. Do your responses mean you agree that painting metal parts with dye is not as good an idea as using "real paint" for the interior metal trim?

          I guess the answer is the factory used "real paint" for metal and some plastic trim items.

            Ditzler interior red is DL71357; R-M is 59C51 (add flattener) and Dupont is 2967 (add flattener)

              Unfortunately those old codes are not any good today. All the mixing colors, binders, etc are gone. Color matching is the best way today.

                I have used the Dye paint with excellent results. I actually found this out quite by accident back in the mid-70's when I was trying to do a little interior rehab and there wasn't much in the way of experts around to ask. I bought the dye to touch up carpeting, and by chance tried it on a plastic panel too and it worked great. My interior is dark blue with a Daytona Blue exterior 63. It looks like new still today some 35 years later. It's a convertible so it has plenty of items covered and exposed to the sun on a regular basis. No one has ever commented other to complement as to how fresh and new my interior looks for a 47 year old car. I have since bought 3 more spray cans of the same dye and store them in a climate controlled room in my house for my heirs.

                  HI Stu could you tell us the brand name/part number and where you bought the spray cans, daytona blue is almost black, and this matches it? Thanks Phil 8063

                    Phil;

                    The first time I used dye was around 1975 and I would have bought it from Terry M's. parts business at that time.

                    The most recent material I used was for some kick panel speakers and it was from MidAmerica. It matched perfectly. I used their "Plastic Prep" first followed by their "Color Coat", 63-64, Dark Blue. It worked so well that I bought the additional supply to keep with the car for the future as I noted. I checked their most recent catalog this morning and, although the label design on the cans has changed, the descriptions and part nos. remain the same.

                      I used the spray can from Long Island Corvette on my '63 Red Convertible and it was a perfect match.
