Attaching W/S to door prior to mounting..'66 Roadster

Typically I've always installed the w/s after the doors have been mounted. Somewhat challenging having to work around the hinge area. Anyone installed the w/s before the door gets mounted? Seems like it would be an easier process.

    Michael,

Get yourself some weldwood contact cement and brush that stuff on like factory.

Did you finally get the hinge problem fixed?

On my C1 Corvettes I always install the weatherstrip before I hang the doors, it is so much easier. I like to prefit the doors and drill 1/8" holes through the hinges for locating pins so I can get them close when installing.

Unsure if I want to use the Weldwood. I've used the the 3M yellow in the past w/o many issues.....not that difficut to use as well. The Weldwood may mimic orginal adhesive more so than 3M but sounds like it's somewhat harsh on the paint. I take it you've use it? To what success?

Anyone else had any experiences gluing the w/s into place before mounting the door?

I have done it both ways and find it is easier to do before mounting the door. Make sure that you do not stretch the w/s. I have always used the yellow 3M. First wipe the w/s with laquer thinner to remove the mold release material, then coat the w/s and the door edge, let set for a minute to set up the apply. If necessary you may want to tape the corners until dry. Good Luck

i always pre install all weatherstrips, i have tried every kind of adhesive known to mankind and the only thing i will use is super glue, they just don't make w/s adhesives like they used to, too runny, too thick, softens the paint, lifting, don't hold, super glue about 4 inches at a time hold it for a few seconds and move on, if its a car to be judged, you can always slop a bunch of weldwood yellow all over the jamb when your through for that original look, good idea Bruce had about the 1/8 " pilot hole, i'll try that next car, bound to save some time when rehanging the doors

Actually, when new, the w/strip adhesive on the doors would be close to transparent with a slight amber tint. Almost invisible from a few feet away. As the adhesive aged, it gradually turned darker. It was not even close to the bright "fire engine yellow" that comes from the folks at 3M.

I doubt anyone really thinks a brand new C2 Corvette that costs about double what a Chevy passenger car cost would have bright yellow w/strip glue slopped all over the doors. I know my brand new white 64 coupe didn't. It was visible up close but not anything like what I've seen a few restorers use.

I have a quart can of correct w/strip adhesive around here somewhere. If I can find it, I'll post the source of the product.

Well......I glued the w/s to the doors last night using the Weldwood contact cement. Must say a little messy but excersing some care, no problems. Cement mimics the original brushed on glue more so than the 3M yellow I must add.

Should be mounting the doors late morning or early afternoon. Again.....will excerise some care. No chips!
