    Carb.Rebuild 63 - WCFB

    Quick question. Any recommendations for a rebuilder to rebuild a 63 WCFB.

    Thanks

    I just purchased a rebuild kit for my 62 WCFB and will do it myself. I like the challenge. Just go slowly.

      Harry;

      You might contact Phil Cancella from Custom Rebuilt Carbs (they are on the net) Phil is located here NJ.. I've dealt with him for a number of things including a pair of WCFB's for the '61 I had plus an AFB for my '63 and a 2314 for the '65. Good guy, honest, stands by his work....

          Question is whether you want to "rebuild" or "restore". I feel that most of us, even with limited mechanical ability, rebuild a 4-barrel carb. However, to restore a carb where you may need to use a number of metal refinishing or repairing processes, etc., that's a different story.

            Stu, it was restored about five years ago and still looks perfect. The problem is, when I hit the gas it bogs down as if the engine is starving for gas. If I stay on it till about 4500 RPM's it's fine.

              sound like the secondary air valve is not working properly,opening too soon before the engine air flow is up.

                  Harry;

                  There are many possibilities as to why you are experiencing a bog down, and not all may be due to the carb. A rebuild alone may not achieve what you need, but is a place to start. That is something you can do yourself. Pay particular attention to all the settings, particularly the accelerator pump and floats. Make sure they are aligned, that the pivot pins are not too loose, and the levels and drops are correct. Check the action of the throttle shafts and the butterflys to be certain they are positive and are seating properly. When the carb is correct and, assuming your ignition system is also operating correctly, the secondary air valve is of little importance. I used to run dual quads without them altogether, but of course I did sweeten the jetting a tad.

                  Point is; don't be intimidated by that WCFB. Use your common sense and mechanical knack. You can solve your problem and learn a lot by so doing.

                    ...or maybe the pump plunger for the accelerator pump is not seating properly. They don't last too long when not used. Fuel dries up and so does the plunger. When you throttle it, does it squirt?

                    Happens every few years to me on my dual four setup. I change the plungers out with new and I'm good to go.

                    Either way, it's not bad to rebuild Harry, you can do it. Here's a few I recently freshened up.....WCFB1 WCFB2. The 2nd one is a '62 250 hp unit, like yours I think.

                      If it's a stumble then the accellerator pump or check valve is suspect but a bog is excess air in the plenum caused like Clem says. Could be a simple adjustment.

                      The accellerator pump is there to cover the lean condition when going from idle circuit to main metering circuit.
