My rear leaf spring is scrathed up, and a little rusty. I want to recon it. What is the color I need??? What has anyone used that looks the closest to original?? It's on a 1964

    Don,

There was a kit from Quanta that included the grey paint and spring liners along with a new center bolt, check there website and see what they offer. On my 63, I painted both sides of the spring after glass beading because I hate rust.

Be careful to trim the new center bolt head to the correct thickness because you can crack the rear housing when you tighten the bolts if it's not trimmed.

Anything from battle ship gray to dove gray will look fine. In fact primer gray (in all it's variations) looks perfect. No actual one shade of gray is required. There was a lot of shade variation as seen on original springs. Somewhere on the covered area of the spring you may find some original color.

Thanks, I should have said in my post. The previous owner of my car had the chassis done about 4 years ago. The spring was painted, but has since been chipped up, and shows a little rust. I was going to try a little touchup first. I didn't think of quanta, I'll see if any of my primers match well enough/ Otherwise I'll take it off and paint it.

          Don,

The gray color of the 64-67 (not 63) springs was called Ionoklad.
It was specified on the tension surface (top side) side of the leaves ONLY and was applied by hand however since the assemble line did not consist of artists lots of Ionoklad has been seen on the bottom sides. The bottom spring typically is covered completely (not sure if the spec called for that, it may have). As far as judging goes I did the entire spring without any deducts at any shows.

Ionoklad is no longer sold by Quanta. I tried to purchase earlier this year.

I stripped and wire brushed my spring, and then coated with Krylon Sprayon Zinc-Rich Cold Galvanizing. 97% zinc dust in an epoxy binder. Code # KRY-S00740. Color is dull gray.

We use this cold galvanizing compound in the chemical plants for touch-up of the hot galvanizing coating for steel beams, etc. Works very well. Time tested......
