    !969 Vacuum Tank w/pb

I have a vacuum tank problem on my L-71 coupe with power brakes. It looks as though the brake booster has to be removed in order to get the tank out. Is this right or wrong? Any removal tricks would be appreciated. Thanks Curt

There have been plenty strings addressing this issue; they basically state this is a PITA to accomplish.

I will be on the sidelines watching as my tank will not hold a vacuum and I am not willing to attack the monster yet.

Curt, there are no tricks. Given that you have an L71 w/PB there is virtually no room to remove the tank without removing the booster. Unbolting the tank is easy. There are six bolts all accessible thru the wheel well. The challenge you have is accessing the booster bolts, particularly the upper left. You will have to remove the dash and entire steering column to access it.

Hi Steven. Now I know why my service manuel only addressed rebuilding the booster not removal. Well it looks as though it will be a multi-faceted repair i.e. anything removed will be reinstalled rebuilt whether it needed it or not.Thank you for your input. Curt

That booster really is a royal pain to replace on a bad day but with the proper tools and patience it's not all bad. I installed mine last year and my dash was already in place...I remember laying under it thinking how much easier this would have been if the dash was still out!

The tops bolts are the tough ones but I think I managed with a combination of extentions and a swivel. The hard part was really lying on my back looking up for so long. At least the seat was out!

Another option might be to do a temp repair on the tank in place. You can move the tank around quite a bit once the bolts are removed so you should be able to see where it's leaking from and take it from there.

You do not have to remove the booster but you will need to remove the master cylinder from the booster and move it inboard a little. I sent 20 minutes turning the vacuum take every posible way and I did finally get it out but that is as much as I can tell you. I have an L-68 with P/B and P/S.

I did not have to remove my vacuum tank. I removed my 70's power brake booster just to paint it. I did not remove my dash, only the air conditioning duct under the drivers dash.
I did not do it, but a person could replace the factory nuts attaching the power brake booster with standard nuts that would make reinstalling easier and removal earier later if you had to.

Hi Jim . Thanks for your input. I finally got mine out. Wow did my hands and forearms take a beating. I like your idea of putting regular nuts on the very hard to reach booster studs. Many other parts will be replaced so this job happens once. Thanks Again Curt
