    1962 Air Filter Disassembly

I recently became the proud owner of a 1962 corvette. It has the 1x4 air filter. The base has a mesh screen around and under which is a very deteriorated piece of foam. I don't want to break anything and want to know if and how I can get the mesh screen off to put another foam filter on. or if I somehow have to redeem what I have.
    Thanks
    Brian

    Hi Brian:

    Congradulations!!

If you have an original style air cleaner, the wire mesh simply sits between the top and bottom cover and is not attached. Send a pic if this is not the case.

If you don't have one, visit a parts place such as Paragon or Ecklers to see what the pieces look like. The foam which is supposed to be oil soaked just fits over the screen.

Keep your screen if original since I think the repros are not exact.

The mesh screen should pull out of the air cleaner cover. It should come apart easily. Reproduction foam is available from all the usual Corvette parts vendors. I believe the recent reproduction is pretty accurate.

If you want to get modern, you can replace foam and mesh with a paper element that'll fit right in there. Wix makes the paper element. Somebody wil post the part number if you want o buy it at your FLAPS. The usual Corvette parts vendors also sell the paper element.

Re the foam filter around the "U" wire frame.

The foam filter I bought a few years ago but never used disintegrated after about 8 years into little pieces. Not good if they got into the Carb.

The foam is ok if you don't drive your car, although it will still turn to powder in 5 to 10 years.
AC makes a replacement paper filter that fits perfectly and is very efficient and cheap.
I believe the part number is A350C, GM 6484295.
Available at most auto part stores.

Just in case this happens to someone else I want to finish this thread. The foam had turned into some kind of superglue over the last 20 + years of inattention and I had to use some extreme persuasion to seperate the parts. Thanks to all who replied. Once I knew it should be in pieces I was less reluctant to force it.
