I have an early February car with the original non-vented cap. When I remove the cap, there's some pressure release. Is that normal? Thanks.

Re: 70 L46 gas tank pressure
Yes it is. At least it has been on my 1970 since I bought it in 1970. Your DD (Daily Driver) unless it is older than 1970 should also do that -- or you have a MIL or Check Engine Light -- if the car is newer than the early 1980s. Welcome to the world of emissions control.Terry- Top

Re: 70 L46 gas tank pressure
In 1971 they added a caution label to the gas cap: "CAUTION OPEN SLOWLY" By 1972 that caution note was embossed into the cap. The reason -- the release of pressure you noticed.
Enjoy your L46 -- that is a very nice motor.Terry- Top

Re: 70 L46 gas tank pressure
Pressure release is normal when removing the sealed non-vented gas cap on a 1970. My original owner 70's gas cap is still sealing well and releases pressure. Has a higher amount of pressure release with lesser amount of fuel in the tank. With below a quarter of tank in the summertime and driven from the garage for several miles I have also experienced hearing the pressure relief valve mounted in the gas tank releasing pressure. Still works after 40 years.- Top
