Build Anomolies for Future C6 Judging Manual

Cleaning the trunk out from a road trip yesterday I noticed these "build features" that my '07 coupe has. When I get it judged in 15 years I want you all to prove you saw it and that there's a photographic record of it.

1- Trunk blackout messiness in the outer corners

2- Oddly shaped screw holding the trunk latch mechanism

3- Incorrectly installed lower trunk rubber bumper

p.s. sorry for the blurry blackout pic, but the tree came out nice and crisp.

I know my 07 ZO6 will lose condition points for the uneven weather strip around the head lamp covers

      Rich,

Interesting that you mentioned that. Last year at the Regional it Kissimmee, I was drooling over a Roger's Corvette 2007 Ron Fellows Edition that was there for sale. When I was looking at it, Tom Hill was there with a few of the guys looking very closely at the drivers' side headlight seal. I didn't realize it was Tom until he turned around. Tom said he would fix it for them in the morning. Wow that was pretty cool....the Tom Hill was going to fix it himself. I got in the conversation and asked what the problem was. He explained it in great detail. Impressive!

He and I then talked for quite a while about the prop shaft rear bearing problem I recently had on my 2007 coupe and how well my dealer did to find it and fix it(Rosners in Melbourne, FL). What a remarkable and ingenious man Tom is, and loved talking with me about the issue. He told me he is now in charge of Warranty related issues on Corvette and I can tell you, becasue of his enthusiam just talking to him, he really wants to help make the Corvette much better. I always love listening to his talks at the Corvette meets when he attends. I hope he's coming to Kissimmee in January.

That's very cool. Interesting in that it is the driver side seal on my car that is "askew". Saw the same thing on a 2010 ZR1.

Re: Build Anomolies for Future C6 Judging Manual

When I watched them build my 2008 I noticed there was a large number of people who finessed the gasket around the headlamps and the alignment of the hood and rear hatch. It seemed to me like there were three or four workstations that adjusted these items.

Tom Hill is truly committed to Corvette. I have been having the faint smell of burning rubber at the rear of my 2008 after driving the car at a rapid rate. At the National we used the lifts there to be sure there were insulating washers installed at the rear muffler brackets on my car -- they were a running addition to the build. Some minor disassembly on Tom's part revealed the insulating washers.

            Terry,

I remember taking all of those shots of your car. Here's one of Tom underneath it on the lift at Charlotte. I think it is yours as you can see the blue front fascia.....I think.

I just noticed in the photo.....are you missing 2 rubber caps for the rear of the bell housing? I can't recall if they're left open or not. I know the rear prop shaft housing should should have the access covers closed to prevent water intrusion.

Re: Build Anomolies for Future C6 Judging Manual

              Rich,

I think that is my car for the same reason you mention. The ZR1 that was on the other lift was white.

I am pretty sure there are no covers over those openings on my car. I don't think there ever was, but I went through the early pictures I took of the chassis, and they don't show the bell housing. I do recall looking through those openings at the clutch a time or two. Next time I am at the parts counter I will have to look to see if there are covers available.

If they are supposed to be there either they were omitted on my car, or they have come off. I didn't take them off.

Re: Build Anomolies for Future C6 Judging Manual

Hmmmm, my 6.0 has one large cover. The 7.0 is obviously different having 2 access holes. I looked in my '07 Service Manual and cannot find a pic of the lower area of the 6.0 or 7.0 bellhousing anywhere. It only has top views. Nowhere is a description of removing them for access to the flywheel/clutch on the 7.0.

Here's a pic of the 6.0 with the big single access hole cover. Yes you may want to check if you should have them. I would think so. I checked for a diagram on gmpartsdirect.com and cannot find anything about any covers.

My rear housing cover is GM part# 12551987. I bought a extra when they discovered it was missing when I had the rear propshaft bearing problem. Discussion HERE on CF.

                  Rich,

I just realized that isn't my car. I had a blue oil filter this year. I just changed it two weeks agobecause the car is in winter storage. All that said, I still think those ports are open on my car because I do remember looking into them. It is interesting that the 6.0 is so different.

Now you know that even today the cars are job #'s as they were back in the 60's. Only today they do a way better job. This is why some of us members beleave that there was never a perfect Corvette that left the factory. That if they did not have the correct headed screws, carpet slits, cotterpin going the right way ETC they woukd shut down the line. LOL My 70 454 Came new with a 3 mast antenna. Try to make that fly in judging along with a 78 pace car with 4 Mi. & paint drips hanging off the front fenders & doors plus silver overspray on the black hood stripe. Good luck 30 years from now because you will be told it never left the factory that way.

This is the one I photographed. looking more closely I'd say you're right. Maybe air exhaust ports to keep the clutch cool. Just seems odd to me that they would be open without screens. I'd think little critters could get in there and make nests!
